Why the name grass/roots?
Why grass?
The word “grass” comes from the old English meaning “grow…or green.” Grass is indicative of
life. Grass has joint stems, provides pasture, nurtures the living, covers a lot of ground and
can be used to raise one’s spirits.
Why roots?
Roots are the part of the plant that supply nourishment, attachment to one’s place of origin,
embedded in the body. “Roots” is a core word. It is the basis, the foundation. “Roots” means
rummaging through dirt to find nourishment. It also means to encourage by support.
Why grass/roots?
We use the name grass/roots as an action…to indicate our desire to grow, to nurture
ourselves, and in nourishing ourselves we acknowledge that we are indeed nourishing the world.
We recognize that we are joint stems therefore we support one another. We are ordinary
women who live in extraordinary ways.
